GLINICA COLLECTIVE

In 2020, the artistic research GLINICA KOLEKTIV began with architects Dafna Berc and Dino Belamarić.

The subject of the research is the territory of the former factory for processing bauxite ore into alumina, which covers 35 hectares of plateau above the town of Obrovac, near the canyon of the river Zrmanja and is infrastructurally connected with Maslenica on the Karin Sea. The territory communicated with the wider infrastructure system of the aluminum industry in the country and beyond through bauxite ore, which arrived to the territory from the regional network of ore deposits. The ore was processed into alumina in the factory plant and went from the territory to the regional networks of processing plants for the production and processing of aluminum. Due to a number of omissions in the conception of the factory project, the factory plant in its implementation sense was a dysfunctional element within the infrastructure network of the former aluminum industry in the country. For this reason, it was closed in 1981, four years after it began operating.

Due to its organization and infrastructural networking, after the cessation of production, the territory of the factory was recognized as a spatial and income potential for the inhabitants of the surrounding settlements. Although the factory by its typological and safety features functioned as a fenced and controlled system accessible only to participants in the production process, after the cessation of production the territory in question established an intensive relationship with the diverse pastoral landscape that surrounds it. Nature literally entered the space and came to life with the remains of abandoned buildings. In contrast to the administrative division, landscape, geomorphological and meteorological perception of the area surrounding the former factory plant and its visual background points to the ambient potential in the panoramic and general phenomenological sense, which define Velebit, the rivers Zrmanja and Krka and the Adriatic Sea.
